DEVELOPING THE EDIT

Documentaries are largely created through intelligent editing, an alchemy that works magic and miracles. If you think this an exaggeration, talk to anyone who’s made the long journey of discovery. This is where the artistic process is most evident and thrilling.

Editing techniques are hard to grasp from a book, but you can see them at work by making a split page ‘A/V script’ analysis of the relationship between sound and picture in a sequence of any film you admire. You should be able to see how editing guides the eyes, ears, and human intelligence all working warmly and humanely together to shape the audience’s attention and feelings.
