Advanced Interviewing

Preparing the Camera Operator

It is wise to use a lens with a variable focal length (zoom lens) and to set up a signaling method with the camera operator so you determine when to zoom between shot sizes. If, on the other hand, you have plenty of pictorial material to edit in parallel, then you can do as Errol Morris often does, and shoot the whole interview in a one-size shot. Other directors incorporate different sizes of shot according to the speaker’s intensity. Varying the shot sizes offers a greater prospect for seamless ellipsis (abbreviation) of the results.
