Preparations Before Directing

Documentaries frequently seem improvised, which suggests misleadingly that a directing plan is unnecessary. In fact, it’s an important plank in your thematic development work before you leap into the fray. Make no mistake, much of your true directing will result directly from the mental, physical, emotional, and technical preparation you have covered during preproduction.

The Directing Plan

Plan multiple coverage of anything vital, such as expository information crucial to the coherence and impact of your story. Some reminders:
