Abstract

With the explosive growth of the commercial and recreational drone industry, making a robust but flexible regulatory framework is an incredibly challenging task for policymakers in seeking to safely integrate drones into airspace. This chapter provides an overview of the regulatory landscape of operations that are being governed at the present moment in the United States, specifically concerning regulations from the Federal Aviation Administration. It first articulates the overall main FAA rules to govern drones generally, including Part 107 for commercial operators, Certificate of Authorizations for public entities, and guidelines for hobbyists. It then emphasizes significant limitations under current rules that restrict sophisticated operations such as beyond visual line of sight flights, expanding drones over populated areas, remote identification, and autonomous operations.
