Yahoo! Auctions

In June 2005, Yahoo! Auctions did away with all its fees. Since Yahoo! is the closest thing eBay has to a serious competitor, this was big news. Sellers gained access to a large, well-known site that doesn't take a bite out of their profits.

Unfortunately, the picture isn't all rosy. Yahoo! finances its auction site with annoying ads that clutter up the screen, as shown in Figure C-4. Some auction watchers worry that the lack of fees will invite tons of junk listings—auctions that look like they're for, say, an MP3 player but are really for outdated lists of wholesale suppliers or links to a multi-level marketing (MLM) site. Others worry that, if Yahoo! Auctions takes off, Yahoo! will go back to charging fees and sellers will either have to hand over a chunk of their profits or spend a ton of time reestablishing their businesses on another auction site.

When you do a search in Yahoo! Auctions, ads appear along the top, bottom, and right side of the results page. And when you view a particular listing, there are a bunch of sponsored links tacked on to the bottom of it.

Still, it's worth giving Yahoo! Auctions a try. If you're a buyer, you can take advantage of the lower prices sellers can charge when they don't have to fork over fees. And if you're a seller, you've got nothing to lose besides the time it takes to set up a couple of test auctions.
