Why the Love / Hate for Pie Charts?

Pie charts are the most controversial topic in the world of data visualization. Some people love them, most people seem to hate them. Why is this?

Well, I believe it comes down to their common misuse. If not constructed properly, pie charts can easily distort the truth and be difficult to read. Most analysts (including myself) never had formal training on data visualization principles for pie charts.

Two pie charts are shown side-by-side. One is named Good Pie and shows an example of best practices for pie charts.  The other is named Bad Pie and shows what not to do. The good pie has five wedges, the category name and percentage outside of each wedge. The bad pie has 12 wedges, uses 3D perspective, a pie explosion, and the category names are moved to the legend without any colors.
