6.4 Scanning for vulnerabilities

There are as many ways to penetrate types of networks as there are

types of machine networks, multiplied by how many active and

unfiltered ports are on those machines. There may exist networks

that use only Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), that

may have a need for only partial Internet access, or that may require

the ability to host an over-net mail server (that is, a mail server that

exists within a single private network that may be of global scope).
