9.2 Telnet
Telnet access allows remote access to computers via a command
prompt, or shell, style of access. Both UNIX and Windows systems
run services that allow this style of access.
Both the Windows command (DOS) window and Internet
Explorer offer the ability to run Telnet. To start Telnet in a com-
mand window, simply type telnet servername at the prompt. The
computer will then attempt to request the Telnet service from port
23 of the host server. If Telnet has been disabled, it should not
respond. If it has been enabled, you will be prompted for a login and
password. Many servers offer free Telnet access to anyone who
