C2. The caps are unlabeled. They are the same size as the resistors and are
normally a kind of brownish-beige in color.
Do not place C1 at this time. Its height makes it difficult to solder other
components. When you have completed placing the parts, the circuit board
should look like the one in Figure 5-12. Once all the other parts have been
placed and soldered, put C1 on the board.
Connect power wire
In the kit you will find a power wire similar to the one shown in Figure
5-13. Connect this single conductor wire to the connection hole labeled
VBAT. The other end will connect to the positive lead of the battery com-
partment later on. For now, use a length of 30-gauge wire or other scrap
wire to connect the positive lead of the battery compartment. Use the
multi-meter to verify which lead is positive, then remove the batteries. To
check the lead, set the meter to measure DC voltage, touch the black probe
to one of the battery wires, and touch the red probe to the other side. If
the meter shows a negative number on the display, the wire you touched
with the black probe is the positive side and the red is negative (sometimes
referred to as ground).
