Resistors are rated for how much power they can handle. Typical power
ratings for small resistors are 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 watts. Do not exceed the
wattage rating: doing so causes the resistor to heat up and fail.
Each resistor is rated for how close its actual value is to the markings on
it. This accuracy is specified either by the vendor or by one of the colored
bands displayed on the resistor. A silver band means that the actual value is
guaranteed to be within 10 percent of its marked value. A gold band means
that the actual value is guaranteed to be within 5 percent of its marked
value.
How to Identify Capacitor Values
Capacitors store electrical energy and are similar in
some ways to small batteries. A capacitor contains two
metal plates and some sort of solid or semiliquid chem-
ical. Figure II-3 shows some of the different shapes and
sizes of capacitors. From left to right are electrolytic
radial lead large value, axial lead electrolytic, standard
electrolytic radial lead, tantalum radial lead, ceramic
radial lead, stacked metal film radial lead, and minia-
ture polyester metalized film radial lead.
Capacitance is measured in Farads, with the letter F
after the value used as shor ...
