DB9 and DB25 connectors
These connectors are commonly used to connect to the serial port of a PC.
A DB9 connector is shown in Figure II-9; a DB25 is in Figure II-10.
The pins on these connectors can be connected to a cable by soldering the
wires to the connector. Some types of these connectors have an IDC con-
nector on the back to allow connection to a cable without soldering.
How to Read a Manufacturer’s Data Sheet
In the chapters that follow, you will need to consult the specification for
a number of integrated circuits to determine how to properly connect the
components according to the given schematics. These specifications are
called data sheets. The easiest way to learn how to extract the data-sheet
information is to walk through one. Each company has its own format, but
the information provided is common.
The sample data sheet we will tour is for a voltage regulator. Figure II-11
shows the first page of a data sheet with some of the more important infor-
mation labeled. Location A is the name of the company that makes the part.
Location B is the part number; this is the same part number that appears
on your schematic diagrams. A short phrase describing the function of the
component is located at C. The text under location D is an overview of what
