Abstract
Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are target-specific protein therapeutics used by patients suffering from cancer, communicable and autoimmune diseases etc. mAb-based therapeutics have grown exponentially with the advent of mammalian cell culture processes and formulation technology. The mAbtherapeutics market is expected to be US$245.8 billion by 2024. A large number of mAbs have been patented for therapeutic use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the European Union health authorities. In the last three decades, various powerful techniques such as hybridoma technology, phage display and B-cell amplification with the help of PCR have been developed for the construction of numerous types of antibodies and antibody fragments with widespread structural modifications. The current review chapter highlights the structure and nomenclature of mAbs, upstream strategies and techniques for cost-effective production of mAbs and recent advances in antibody technology.
