CHAPTER 6For the Next Twenty Years …
NOW IS ABOUT THE TIME WHEN I SHOULD SHARE STORIES with you about how these head injuries affected me physically, mentally, and emotionally. The problem is I have trouble remembering a lot of specifics. I do, however, remember the feeling of my struggles.
Emotionally, I began to feel like I wasn't good enough for anything. I didn't feel like I was worthy of a solid romantic relationship with anyone. I'm not sure how many relationships I sabotaged, but I know there were more than a few.
I didn't feel like I measured up in social circles. This person or that person was clearly better than me personally and professionally. Not feeling like I measured up to anyone, anywhere tore me up inside.
Because I didn't feel like I measured up, I constantly felt like I was being slighted by people. I would stew over a perceived slight. I felt like people were intentionally disrespecting me. I would carry that anger and shame with me until I could, in some way, shape, or form, return the favor to the “guilty” party.
To this day, I don't know how many times I was actually slighted, but my guess is not many. If I chose to confront the person directly, I would let them know in no uncertain terms that any more slights or disrespect would be conducted at their peril.
As I think back on these instances, I can vividly recall the look of confusion on the person's face. I'm sure the confusion had something to do with the fact that they had no idea what I was talking ...
