CHAPTER 22Element Five—Facing the Resistance
GREAT LEADERSHIP IS ABOUT SOMETHING BIGGER THAN yourself, and it doesn't matter who, where, or what you are leading. The Ice Cold Leader Methodology is a common sense approach that is easy to understand. Follow it, and you will find success as a leader in every aspect of your life.
By now, you've seen that implementing the process of great leadership is hard. It requires consistent and focused humility and discipline. Even with this humility and discipline in place, we stumble. There always seems to be something lurking around the corner that is trying to derail our ability to accomplish something bigger than ourselves.
In the final element of the leadership process, we're going to look at that “something” that works doggedly to subvert our leadership efforts and, for that matter, our efforts to become better human beings. That something is the “Resistance.”74 Its definition is, “The refusal to accept or comply with something; the attempt to prevent something by Action or argument.” For our purposes, we'll further define the “Resistance” as that unexplained force of nature that works to stop you from accomplishing something bigger than yourself. This is what leadership is—something bigger than yourself.
For example, the Resistance does not show itself when you are happily eating greasy takeout food on the couch while you binge-watch the latest iteration of junk TV. The Resistance feeds that behavior.
