Find My iPhone
If you have MobileMe and an iPhone, then you've got a piece of real magic at your disposal: the ingeniously named Find My iPhone. The bottom line: If you ever lose your iPhone, you have a fighting chance at getting it back.
You can make the iPhone beep loudly for two minutes, even if the ringer switch is off, and even if the phone is asleep—so you can figure out what couch cushion it's under or what jacket pocket you left it in. You can also make a message pop up on the screen; if you actually left the iPhone in a taxi or on some restaurant table, you can plead for its return to whomever finds it.
If an ethical person finds your phone, you might get it back. If it's a greedy person who says, "Hey cool! A free iPhone!" maybe you can bombard him with so many of these messages that he gives it back in exasperation.
If not, and if you're worried about some stranger seeing all your private email and listening to your most private pop songs, you can avail yourself of one more amazing last-ditch feature: Remote Wipe.
That means erasing your iPhone by remote control, from wherever you happen to be. The evil thief can do nothing but stare in amazement as the phone suddenly erases itself, winding up completely empty.
(If you ever get the phone back, you can just sync with iTunes, and presto! Your stuff is back on the phone—at least everything since your last sync.)
