1 COMING OF AGE IN THE SILICON ERA

When I was growing up in Texas, Alaska, Florida, Colorado, and Alabama, no one told me dreams might never come true; I just assumed they would. Later in life, when people said my science projects and goals were impossible, I kept pursuing them. When scientists said some of the ambitious science fair projects my children planned would not be successful, I told them that meant they would be. Their projects went on to earn many awards and scholarships and were published in books and scientific journals and displayed in major museums.

My father, Forrest M. Mims Jr., influenced this approach to life. My brother, Milo, and I sometimes made life difficult for our parents, but our hero was our dad. In our eyes, Daddy ...
