On May 28, 1966, I graduated from Texas A&M and the next day was commissioned into the Air Force as a second lieutenant. A week later, orders arrived for me to report to the Armed Forces Air Intelligence Training Center, at Lowry Air Force Base, Colorado.
The primary role of the AFAITC was to train military personnel to interpret images acquired by airborne cameras, infrared sensors, and radar. The photographic images came from cameras flown from a variety of aircraft, including the high-flying Lockheed U-2. We learned to carefully inspect aerial images to find and measure the dimensions of everything from huts and oil drums to aircraft, landing strips, power plants, and factories.
