15 THE ROLEX AWARD
In 1986, I learned about the Rolex Awards for Enterprise, a program sponsored by the famous Swiss watch company to recognize people with unique projects in applied sciences and invention, exploration and discovery, or the environment. Their objective is “empowering exceptional individuals,” and the Rolex Awards “support inspiring individuals who carry out innovative projects that advance human knowledge or well-being.”
The travel aid for the blind was on my mind, and although I lacked the funds to develop a better prototype than my 1972 eyeglass version, I sent for the awards application, which required a detailed explanation of the project and how it would be more fully implemented should it win an award.
