19 BACK TO BRAZIL

Following SCAR-B and the IRS paper, I became increasingly concerned by the apparent connection between ultraviolet reduced by smoke and human health. Brent Holben and some of his Goddard Space Flight Center colleagues were intrigued by my idea. While they had no authority to assign me to conduct a health study, they could send me back to Brazil to repeat the measurements I had made in 1995. A survey of the relationship of airborne bacteria to the solar UV that managed to leak through the smoky skies would be a bonus. Brent suggested that the proposed study be conducted at Alta Floresta, a remote town in the Amazon basin 400 miles (644 km) north of Cuiabá.

Unfortunately, NASA was not allowed to conduct smoke research in Brazil ...
