Because of the very positive mail that arrived when my three columns were published in Scientific American, I was optimistic that Jonathan Piel would allow me to continue writing The Amateur Scientist. But Piel rejected six new proposals I sent that included measuring the length of lightning bolts and detecting killer bees by the frequency of their hum. I had also made major progress with the sun-photometer project and TOPS, the handheld instrument that measured the ozone layer. Letters sent to Claus-G. Firchow, president of the magazine’s parent company, went unanswered. It was time for Jonathan Piel’s public relations nightmare, but I had no idea how best to trigger it.
