Although no examples are presented in this chapter that prepare amino acids via a
direct aldol condensation, examples will be presented in connection with the synthe-
sis of statine (see Chapter 6, Section 6.6). However, the Mukaiyama aldol reaction
(or just the Mukaiyama reaction) has been used for the synthesis of amino acids, and
this variation of the aldol is discussed because there are reactions with molecules
that contain an amine surrogate.
