WHEN I TOOK my executive MBA program many years ago, I was required to take a course on probability theory. I had failed high school and only gotten into the MBA program because I had a high SAT score. My worst subject in school had been mathematics, and probability theory was based on differential calculus, complex ways of evaluating data and determining probabilities.

I was so bad at probability theory that I had to repeat the course two semesters in a row before I got through it. But it turned out to be one of the most valuable programs I had ever attended. It changed my life forever.
