Dark side leadership

Babiak, P. and Hare, R. (2007) Snakes in Suits: When Psychopaths Go to Work. New York: HarperCollins.

This is a chatty, gossipy introduction to the dark side of leadership.

Furham, A. (2010) The Elephant in the Boardroom. Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan.

Covers similar ground within a more academic and formal framework.

Effective change

Rowland, R. and Higgs, M. (2008) Sustaining Change: Leadership That Works. New York: Jossey-Bass.

This is a very readable account of their research, illuminating their findings with extended case-studies from their research

Lewis, S. Passmore, J. and Cantore, S. (2007) Appreciative Inquiry for Change Management: Using AI to Facilitate Organizational Development. London: Kogan Page.

In this practical text, my colleagues and I explain the different conceptualizations of organization that underpin directive and emergent change. It could be a useful addition to Rowland and Higgs if you want more background in this area, with some guidance about how to go about working for change in a more emergent way.

Effective leadership

Cameron, K. (2008) Positive Leadership. San Francisco : Berrett-Koehler.

Short, practical, readable and inexpensive.
