It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

This field is usually set to zero for all OSs. Linux has the precedence bits of the ToS field set to 0xC0. ICMP error messages are always sent with the default ToS value of 0x0000. The ICMP echo reply message should have the same ToS value as the ICMP request message.
