本稿は2017年10月時点の現状に基づいたものです。ROS2 は2014年頃から設計や開発が始まり、2015年に一部の基本機能が動作するα版が公開され、2016年にはROS2を用いたロボットシステムのデモをTurtlebotで実現しています。2017年12月にはROS2の正式版リリースが予定されています。本稿は、ROSの拡張ではなく、進化版とも言えるROS2の概要について解説します（現行のROSはROS2に対してROS1と呼ばれることもありますが、ここではROSとします）。
Ｂ.1 なぜROS2が開発されているのか
世界中のロボット研究の場ではすでにROSが広く使われている中で、OSRFは、ROSとは直接の互換性のない新規のROSを、ROS2というまったくの新しいシステムとしてフルスクラッチでの開発を進めています。これはROSが生まれて数年が経過し、当初のロードマップ上の研究開発用ロボット以外にもROSが適用され、想定していた場面以外のさまざまな状況でのROSの活用が増えたことで、現行のROSではいくつか不足する点が指摘されるようになったためです。
ROSは研究者やプログラマー向けにデザインされており、使いやすく自由度の高い仕組みによって近年のロボティクスの進化を加速させてきました。一方で、産業用ロボットや実社会展開の場面では、リソースが限られた環境下での動作や組み込みへの対応が求められます。こうした対応を実現することを目的としてROS2は開発が進められており、産業応用を踏まえた重要なプロジェクトとして注目されています。
