The ftplib module allows an application to connect to an FTP server and perform operations on it. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a network protocol developed for file transfers in TCP/IP networks and is widely used on the internet. For example, file transfers to a web server are usually done via FTP.
The FTP protocol is very simple and consists of a set of human-readable commands. So basically, you could also communicate directly with an FTP server without interposing an abstracting library. Table 34.4 lists the most important FTP commands and briefly explains their meaning. You’ll see that the ftplib uses a naming scheme that is based on these commands.
