38.2    Creating Distributions: setuptools

To create a distribution using the setuptools package, the following steps are generally required:

• Writing your module or package[ 180 ]

• Writing the setup.py installation script

• Creating a source distribution or a binary distribution

These steps will be described in detail in the following sections.

Note

In general, you can use setuptools to create distributions of not only modules or packages, but also extensions. Such extensions can later be imported like a module or package, but unlike normal modules or packages, they are written in a different programming language—usually C or C++. In Chapter 40, Section 40.3.3, we will describe the use of setuptools in connection with extensions.
