This chapter introduced some basic backup and recovery tools you can use with Red Hat Linux. Before you blindly back up your system, first sit down and plot a backup strategy. Always assume that the worst can happen! Make a plan to accommodate your users, their needs, and your needs for system integrity. For example, what happens if your system was cracked more than one month ago? Will you be able to backtrack and restore a safe system? Backups are important, but being able to restore the files is more important. Nothing will cause a lump in the throat to appear faster than trying to restore a system, only to find that the backups failed.
