One axis of the grid is the accountability level: Direct, Control or Execute. The reader should note that such old-fashioned hierarchical thinking is discouraged in mission grid analysis. The other axis tends to have labels that are dependent on the specific industry but are always similar to these: Manage, Design, Buy, Make, Sell. The cells within the grid hold individual business process names. Like mission grid analysis, the BCM technique emphasizes customer related goals but these are not made explicit in the structure of the grid.
IBM has developed specific BCMs for some vertical industries. These are very detailed and might well be useful as checklists to ensure that no process area has been inadvertently ignored in a mission grid.
8 Omega is an approach that suggests the tasks that need to be carried out during enterprise business process management exercises. The tasks are classified within a grid the axes of which are as follows.
Dimensions: Strategy; People; Processes; Systems.
Task types: Discover; Analyse; Design; Validate; Integrate; Implement; Control.
There are from one to four recommended tasks per cell of the grid. As an example, in the Discover/People cell we find the following three tasks: audit current skills; determine process rôles; map functional activities to customer outcomes (i.e. goals). ...
