4.9. Summary
Business process modelling is central to requirements analysis and especially relevant in an SOA environment. It has its origins in workflow technology and the BPR movement of the 1990s. Modern business process management has embraced important standards such as UML activity diagrams, BPMN, WS-BPEL and WS-CDL. This chapter described these in outline and introduced the key ideas of network business process modelling techniques.
We described and considered the business process modelling patterns of Aalst et al. and showed how some of them might be represented in BPMN before introducing an order processing example that will be used throughout this book.
Next, we looked at WS-BPEL and the notions of orchestration and choreography.
It is claimed that BPML formal semantics are based on, or at least inspired by process algebra, while a BPMN or activity diagram is given its semantics using Petri nets. We examined both these topics briefly and saw that rule-based semantics (i.e. set theory) were a viable and simpler alternative in the majority of cases.
Finally, I noted that business processes may be collaborative rather than procedural; so that business process management has a human side that will be emphasized in subsequent chapters. The importance of business rules came to the fore in this context too.
