It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
18 Aerial photography
18.1 Introduction
Aerial photography uses various cameras and imaging systems to take photographs of subjects on the ground below, or of the terrain itself, for purposes such as map making, military reconnaissance, civil applications and pictorial photography (Muir, 1984; Stonehouse, 1982). Aerial photography is usually limited to the visible and near IR (photographic) parts of the spectrum. Extension of recording to other regions is detailed in Chapter 19 on remote sensing. The use of aerial photography for survey purposes for map making is termed topographical photogrammetry, and specific details on photogrammetric principles are covered in Chapter 16.
