Refrain from Giving Out Personal Information
People must not give out their personal information on the phone,
through e-mails, or over the Internet unless they have initiated the com-
munication or are sure they know who they are dealing with. Identity
thieves are cunning and pose as representatives of banks, Internet service
providers (ISPs), and even government agencies to get people to reveal
their SSN, mother’s maiden name, account numbers, and other iden-
tifying information. Before consumers share any personal information,
they must confirm that they are dealing with a legitimate organization.
