本章では、SREのサブセットとしてのデータベースリライアビリティエンジニアリングとはどのような技術かについて説明します。データベース層はリスクに対する許容度が最も低い階層であり、それだけにリライアビリティエンジニアリングの文化を通じて最も改善の機会が見込まれる領域の1つと考えられます。従来のデータベース管理者（database administrator＝DBA）が行っていたのは言わば、サイロやスノーフレーク†2を作り出すことでした。つまりはツールが異なり、ハードウェアが異なり、言語も異なる状況でした。DBAはSQLを書き、システムエンジニアはPerlを書き、ソフトウェアエンジニアはC++を書き、Web開発者はPHPを書き、ネットワークエンジニアは独自の完璧なアプライアンスを構成していました。どのような形であれバージョン管理を使用しているのはチームの半分に過ぎず、他の人々の仕事に口出しをしたり踏み込んだりはしないのが不文律でした。それは見知らぬ土地に足を踏み入れるようなもので、したくてもできなかったわけです。 ...
