So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

本書はO'Reilly Mediaより出版された“Seeking SRE: Conversations About Running Production Systems at Scale”の日本語訳です。同じくO'Reilly Mediaより出版された“Site Reliability Engineering - How Google Runs Production System”（以下、SRE本）が出版されたのが2016年3月のことでした†1。それまでGoogle社内で実践されてきたサイトリライアビリティエンジニアリング（以下、SRE）がこの頃から広く知られるようになり、多くの企業や組織でSREが導入され始め、SREを専任で行うチームを立ち上げる企業も増えてきました。
[†1] その日本語訳である『SRE サイトリライアビリティエンジニアリング―Googleの信頼性を支えるエンジニアリングチーム』（オライリー）が出版されたのは2017年8月でした。その頃より日本でも多くの企業でSRE導入の事例が出てきています。
SREは現在、狭義のSREと広義のSREが存在している状況です。狭義のSREはSRE本で解説されているような各種ベストプラクティスを実践することを指し、広義のSREはこれまでDevOps、あるいはそれ以前ではシステム管理と呼ばれた職務を呼び替えたものを指します。ここではSREとは狭義のSREを指すことにします。SREを実践するためには、単なる方法論だけではなく、組織や会社全体を巻き込んだ変化が必要になることが往々にしてあります。たとえばSREの中でまず課題となるサービスレベル目標の設定は、広い組織からの情報が必要となります。非難のないポストモーテムを実現するには、企業内に広く文化として共有される必要があります。こうした取り組みは一朝一夕で実現されるものではないでしょう。 ...
