11.3 CLASSIFICATION OF COLUMNS

The resistance of any member to bending depends on the flexural rigidity (i.e., EI) and moment of inertia (I = Ak2). Thus, for a given material, the load per unit area the member can withstand is related to k. For a given cross section there will be two principal moments of inertia. Considering the length of the member and the least moment of inertia or the radius of gyration, a ratio called slenderness ratio is defined as
