Thin cylindrical shell analysis has been made based on the assumption that the hoop stress is constant throughout the thickness of the shell and the radial stress is negligible. This assumption is justifiable as long as thickness to internal diameter is less than 1/20.
In a cylinder if the above ratio is greater than 1/20, it is referred to as thick cylinders. In thick cylinders, the hoop stress is not constant but varies along the thickness and the radial stress is not negligible. The problem of thick cylinder is, in general, complex in nature.
