Shells may have different shapes such as cylindrical, cylindrical with conical bottom, hemispherical, spherical, etc. In this section, thin cylindrical shells under internal pressure is only dealt.
In a cylindrical shell due to the internal pressure p, stresses are developed on the walls of the cylinder on the cross section along the axis, on the cross section perpendicular to the axis and in radial direction (Figure 9.1)
