
‘Do-it-yourself’
New Towns
There were also several attempts at ‘Do-
it-yourself new towns’ by forward-thinking
organisations – notably, the Greentown
Group at Milton Keynes (Fig 4.04), the
TCPA at Lightmoor, Telford (Fig 4.05) and
Findhorn Eco Village in Moray, Scotland. In
these cases, groups of individuals driven
by the collective aim of a fairer and more
cooperative way of living attempted to
gain control of land and start their own
communities. A combination of market
forces (rising land values) and fearful
local authorities prevented many of these
schemes from becoming a reality.
