
Over a century after the Garden City movement began, the nation is still
dealing with inadequate housing and huge social inequalities. Before
exploring, in Chapter 6, the role of new garden cities in addressing these
issues, this chapter looks at the roots of some of the contemporary challenges
in Britain: the housing crisis, public health and climate change. While
Chapter 3 outlined how new towns, and new communities more generally,
