This chapter explores the political debate about the role of modern
garden cities as part of a ‘portfolio’ of solutions to the problems described
in Chapter 5. Ebenezer Howard could not know that many of the ideas
he set out, such as the need for green infrastructure or rapid public
transport, would also help to address more recent 21st-century problems
such as climate change and obesity.
The chapter also sets out what the garden city model means today, and
makes the case for creating highly sustainable new communities by
addressing, head on, some of the key criticisms of this approach.
