
Climate Change
Climate change is the greatest long-term
challenge facing human development. It
is clearly our biggest economic and social
challenge, because without climate stability
we cannot forge a long-term, sustainable
and fair society in the future. The science
is clear, and examples from Europe, like
Freiburg in Germany (Fig 5.06), and the
rest of the world demonstrate that climate
change can be tackled by shaping new
and existing developments in ways that
reduce carbon dioxide emissions and create
resilience to extreme weather events such
as flooding and heatwaves (Fig 5.07).
