Layers make the digital artist’s life easier. When creating an illustration, we can reposition things, change how objects interact with each other, and apply color, shading, and texture that conforms to the general shape of objects. Keeping elements on separate layers enables us to focus our efforts on changing only targeted areas, without affecting the entire illustration or requiring meticulous repainting every time a shape or position changes. The general technique of coloring an illustration or shape is to lay out line work on one or more layers, apply flat colors with each on its own layer, and then apply layers of textures and shading that conform within the line work and flat color.
