Because animators typically get into the artform to see things move around, they often neglect practicing backgrounds in lieu of figures. Many famous comic artists will do anything but draw backgrounds, and certainly in the high-paced industry of weekly manga, it’s the job of the assistants to deal with illustrating landscapes, cityscapes, interiors, and so on.
Most of my own art career has been in portrait photography, where a background was a setting for a subject—often a cyclorama or simple negative space.
