Aligning Organizational Context to Support Social Networks

The strength of the network analysis is that it gives you a visual of what’s going on and allows you to make specific adjustments. But you also really have to pay attention to aspects of the organization that affect collaboration. Networks don’t exist in a vacuum. Things like culture, incentives, leadership, and hierarchy influence who speaks to whom. I think what our maps show is that if you just try to intervene inside the network and ignore organizational forces that are kind of pressing on the network in various ways, you are fighting a losing battle and likely to see things snap back to unproductive patterns.
