referred to as a priority tag.
Figure3.7 illustrates the Ethernet frame extended to support vLAN
tagging. Note that the 802.3ac standard resulted in the maximum
Ethernet frame being extended from 1518 bytes to 1522 bytes. Because
some software and ROM chips consider a frame length beyond 1518
bytes to be in error, older adapter cards need to be carefully checked to
determine if they can work in a modern vLAN environment.
Currently a hex value of FF in the vLAN ID is reserved. All other
values can be used as vLAN identifiers, enabling up to 4094 vLANs. ...
