e purpose of this chapter is to acquaint you with the two key trans-
port layer protocols supported by the TCP/IP suite. ose protocols
are the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the User Datagram
Protocol (UDP).
As indicated in Chapter 3, when we discussed the IP protocol,
either TCP or UDP can be identified by the setting of an applicable
value in the IP header under both IPv4 and IPv6. Although the use
of either transport layer protocol results in the placement of the appro-
priate transport layer header behind the IP header, there are signifi-
cant differences between the functionality of each transport protocol.
