4.1.1.1.4 Registered Port Numbers Registered ports are ones whose

values range from 1024 to 49151. Although all ports above 1023 can

be used freely, the IANA requests vendors to register their applica-

tion port numbers with it. Although an application or process may be

registered, its registration does not hold legal implications and is pri-

marily to enable other vendors to develop compatible products as well

as to enable end users to appropriately set up equipment. For example,

if a new application uses a registered port number it is a relatively easy
