computer overwrites the previously erased file, it leaves 10 sectors that
are not used. Similarly, if you need to store 20 sectors of data, chances
are high that the operating system will either look for 20 contiguous
sectors, in effect leaving a hole of 14 sectors unused, or use the 14 sectors
from the deleted file and then move the read/write heads of the hard
drive to another location where the remaining 6 sectors will be written,
causing the file to become fragmented. Over time, both the files and
the hard disk itself will become fragmented, and your computer slows
down, as it has to look in many different places to save or retrieve files.
