Installing the WINS Server Service
Install the WINS service from the Network Services page of the Network property sheet (Control Panel → Network → Services tab). Select Add to display the Select Network Service dialog where you can highlight Windows Internet Name Service for installation. Windows NT displays the Windows NT Setup dialog to prompt for the location of the distribution files; accept the default or specify a new location as appropriate. Windows NT copies the distribution files and returns to the Network property sheet, which now shows WINS as an installed service.
When you close the installation dialog, Windows NT configures, stores, and reviews the bindings, and then asks if you want to restart your computer to activate the WINS settings. Windows NT Server configures the WINS Server service by default to start automatically each time the server is booted. You can use the Services applet in Control Panel to modify the startup settings for the WINS Server service, or to start, stop, pause, or continue the WINS Server service.
You can also control the WINS Server service from the command prompt, using the commands net start wins, net stop wins, net pause wins, and net continue wins. These commands are useful primarily for creating batch files to backup your server, including the WINS Server database, during off hours.
