Software Security

Good passwords and secure communications links are important security measures. However, using good, secure user authentication isn’t the only thing that you can do to improve the security of your computer and your network. Many Windows NT security problems occur when well known software bugs are exploited. In this section we’ll look at some things you can do to improve software security.

Keep Software Updated

Microsoft frequently releases Windows NT software updates for the express purpose of improving network security. Check for security fixes in the latest version of the Microsoft software as soon as it becomes available. If you aren’t keeping up with the latest security updates, rest assured that the crackers are, and are waiting for a chance to exploit any vulnerability in your system.

First and foremost, install the latest service pack for Windows NT. At this writing, it is Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3, though very soon Service Pack 4 will be released. Service packs are very important because they often contain critical security fixes. Always start with the latest service pack before applying any other security fixes.

In addition to the latest Service Pack, check http://www.microsoft.com/security for the most recent security patches. Don’t wait for the next Service Pack. Install the fixes as soon as they are released. At this writing, there are several hot fixes that have not yet reached a Service Pack. These are:
